Kip's Bay Decorator Show House
Jan's Inspiration
After visiting the pro0posed property for Kips Bay, I was on a plane going to Los Angeles. We had not planned to participate this year other than on the committee and the President’s Dinner Committee. For some inexplicable reason, I started having a vision of a cozy lounge that would be a club within a club. The walls would be a burnished gold painted wallpaper (I thought immediately of de Gournay because I had discussed doing a room with them in Palm Beach earlier) with drapery and ceiling to match.
I could envision back to back traditional sofas in the middle of the room with a console in between and a pair of low wattage lamps to create the mood. There would need to be chairs but I wanted them to be more modern, upholstered in different styles and colors of fabulous Fortuny fabrics. And, then---a pair of mirrors on opposite walls hung in the European style in a wonderful burnished gold leaf. De Gournay has stunning mirrors that look old.
Of course, there had to be a bar in the room and I happened to have a fabulous Italian one that always reminds me of Harry’s Bar in Venice---it even has sketches of Venice on each front panel. Kravet, who is my partner and represents so many designs of mine, was generous to provide the gorgeous velvets for the sofa and other chairs in the room. We were off to the races!
I never looked back and knew we had to do this room. I named it after the old Cipango Club where Jim and I used to go in the ‘80’s---The Cipango Room---a club within a club. The Golden Hour.
